Biochar
Have you ever thought about your microorganisms? The ones in your dirt. The ones in the air, the ones in the water percolating through your garden beds? A symphony of microscopic critters are working overtime to create the food you enjoy everyday. Biochar can be thought of as housing for these microorganisms. Wood that has been pyrolyzed and ground into small bits has a tremendous surface area for microorganisms to occupy and thrive. Fresh biochar can be filled with nutrients and food to entice the microorganisms to occupy its massive surface area. This is referred to as ‘charging’, or inoculating the biochar. You can add biochar to your garden beds or potted plants to improve your soil’s growing capacity.
For more information, including other techniques for charging, visit our biochar page.

Eggs
Soy-free & organically grown
We are bias, but we believe we’ve achieved the perfect egg formula. Freedom, quality food, adequate nutrients, and security are the pillars of incredible eggs. Life on the edge of the Sandwich Range Wilderness Area can be fright with predator pressure, but it is ripe with diversity and opportunity abounds. Above and below ground, a full-spectrum drama unfolds for organisms of all sizes each day as the sun rises and sets over a lush mixed woods forest. The chicken and the duck each have a niche in this environment. The chicken is jungle fowl, it loves a good forest. As it scratches through the complex layers of leaves and fungi abound in this ecosystem, it finds all sorts of proteins and minerals to consume. The more diverse the ecosystem, the better the egg. The more lush the land becomes, the better the egg.
The challenge for us is the chicken can be its best chicken for just about six months, or the length of our short growing season. The other half of the year, it depends on us to supply what it needs to thrive. The same goes for our ducks. Our ducks benefit from the high rainfall we get here and also the thick mulch our forests produce each year. The humid climate we have promotes slugs and bugs, and our ducks are efficient at hunting these down as well. But when winter hits, these water-loving birds, just like the chickens, need us to keep the system going. We gladly do our part and supplement their natural feed with soy-free organic feed full of nutrients and a daily regiment of sprouted grains. In the winter months, it’s these sprouts that provide most of the greens these birds eat and come spring, this makes all the difference in egg flavor.
